Today BMW M GmbH unveiled its highly anticipated M4 GTS concept, a first M3/M4 special production car to be sold in the US from next year. The BMW M4 GTS Concept showcases some new technologies like an innovative water injection system to boost overall power output of its turbocharged 3.0L engine and rear lights with OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology for an unmistakable appearance. This street legal car design is highly inspired from BMW M4 Coupe sport car and comes with track ready features.
The BMW M4 GTS concept is lighter than the normal BMW M4 and is executed in a Frozen Dark Grey metallic shed with the acid orange accent on the front splitter and alloy wheels to express its aggressive and dynamic look. The concept comes with 265/35R – 19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires up front and 285/30R – 20s at the rear mounted on forged aluminium wheels. The aerodynamic body kit includes CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) hood which reduces overall body weight significantly, a wide front air intake optimizes airflow and minimizes front axle lift, the manually adjustable front splitter and rear wing both made of carbon fiber composite material.
Under the hood, 3.0L twin turbo six – cylinder engine comes with a water injection system to boost power and torque output of the engine. This system injects water in the air intake manifold. During the compression stroke, water vaporizes which decreases the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber and therefore reduces the tendency of ‘knock’, enabling to use high boost pressure to produce maximum power output for a given RPM.
The M4 GTS comprises a main radiator and additional radiators for high temperature circuit, low temperature circuit, transmission system and turbocharger in order to keep the temperature stable. For effective cooling, a turbocharger is provided with indirect cooler assisted by an additional water pump. The snake like OLED taillight appearance is definitely attractive and innovative. Technology honed in race competition, light – weight structure, improved performance, sporty look and limited production numbers makes M4 based GTS concept more impressive than ever.
In a press release BMW M GmbH says, “Despite its outstanding track ability, it is still fully road-legal, this is racing technology for the road in the truest sense.”
